Expense tracking in Pakistan: PKR, cash, and bank SMS

Cash, cards, JazzCash, Easypaisa, and a stream of bank SMS alerts. Here's how to track spending in Pakistan without linking your bank or losing your privacy.

To track spending in Pakistan you need three things: amounts in PKR, a way to handle cash and digital payments together, and something that can turn your bank and wallet SMS alerts into entries. PennyWise does all three, offline and with no bank login. Here is how to set it up for the way money actually moves here.

The Pakistani money-tracking problem

Spending here is a mix that most expense apps handle badly:

  • Cash and digital together. A cash lunch, a card at the grocery store, a JazzCash or Easypaisa transfer, all in one day.
  • A stream of alerts. Your bank and wallet apps ping you (push or SMS) on nearly every transaction.
  • PKR, not dollars. You want totals in rupees, not a foreign default.
  • Privacy and trust. Handing an app your bank login is a non-starter for most people, and rightly so.

The result: people give up and stop tracking. The fix is an app that meets all of this without asking for your bank credentials.

Amounts in PKR

PennyWise supports PKR as a display currency (along with USD, EUR, GBP, and INR), so your dashboard and history read in rupees. You set it once and every total shows the way you think about money.

Cash and digital, in one place

Cash does not send a notification, so you log it the fast way: 3 taps, amount, category, save. For your card, bank, and wallet spending, let the alerts do the typing (below). Both live in the same history, so your weekly total reflects everything, not just the digital half.

Turning bank and wallet alerts into transactions

This is the part that saves you the most time. With the optional Auto-capture feature on, PennyWise reads the notification your bank or wallet app posts, including the notification your messaging app shows for a bank text, and drafts the entry for you to approve.

  • It works with any app that posts you a money alert, so a bank push and the notification for a bank text are both fair game.
  • Account and card numbers are masked on your device before anything leaves it.
  • Only a masked snippet is read (transiently, never stored) to pull out the amount and merchant.
  • Get both a bank push and an SMS for the same payment? They merge into one entry.
  • Every captured transaction is a draft you approve, so a garbled alert never quietly becomes a wrong record.
No bank login, no account linking. It reads the alert already sitting in your notification shade, not your bank account.

Private by default

Your transactions stay on your device, with no account and no cloud sync. The only thing that touches the cloud is that masked snippet during Auto-capture, and it is never stored. Auto-capture is off until you turn it on. For the full detail, see the privacy policy.

Setting it up

  • Install PennyWise and set your currency to PKR.
  • Log a cash expense in 3 taps to get the feel.
  • Turn on Auto-capture in Settings and grant notification access, so bank and wallet alerts start becoming drafts.
  • Approve each draft. Your rupee totals build themselves.
