How to track expenses automatically from bank notifications (without linking your bank)
Your bank already tells you every time money moves. The fastest, most private way to track spending is to let an app read that alert, not your bank account.
You can track expenses automatically without ever handing over your bank login. The trick is to use the transaction alerts your bank already sends to your phone. An app reads that notification, pulls out the amount and merchant, and drafts the entry for you to approve, with no account linking and no passwords. Here is how it works, and how to set it up.
Two ways apps "auto-track" your spending
Almost every automatic expense tracker falls into one of two camps, and the difference matters a lot for your privacy.
1. Bank linking (aggregators). You connect your bank account, often by entering your online-banking credentials or authorizing a service like an account aggregator. The app then pulls your transaction history from your bank onto its servers. It is powerful, but you are sharing standing access to your account, and a copy of your financial history now lives on someone else's infrastructure.
2. Notification reading. The app reads the transaction alert that is already sitting on your phone, the "you spent PKR 1,500 at Careem" push or SMS your bank sends anyway. It never touches your actual bank account. There is no login to hand over and no standing connection to revoke.
PennyWise uses the second approach. It is the reason it can track your spending automatically while staying offline and private by default.
How notification-based tracking works
Here is exactly what happens, start to finish, when you have Auto-capture turned on:
- Your bank or wallet app posts a transaction alert, a push notification or an SMS.
- PennyWise reads that text on your device and checks whether it looks like a transaction.
- Any account or card numbers in the text are masked on your phone, before anything leaves it.
- A masked snippet, just enough to read the amount and the merchant, briefly leaves your phone to be read by our AI processing provider, then is discarded. It is never stored on a server.
- The result lands in an approval queue as a draft. You approve it, edit it, or reject it. Nothing is added to your records until you do.
It works whether the app is open or closed, and if your bank sends both a push and an SMS for the same purchase, the two alerts collapse into a single entry.
The app never sees your bank account. It only ever sees a notification you already received, the same one sitting in your notification shade right now.
What stays private
Notification reading sounds sensitive, so it is worth being precise about what does and does not happen:
- No bank login, ever. There is no account linking, no credentials, and no access to your balance, statements, or anything you were not already notified about.
- Account numbers are masked on-device. Card and account digits are stripped before any processing.
- Only a masked snippet leaves your device, transiently. It is sent to our AI processing provider to read the amount and merchant, then discarded, and it is never stored on a server.
- Non-financial notifications are ignored. Your chats, emails, and everything else are filtered out.
- You approve everything. Every captured transaction is a draft. It is a suggestion, not a silent write to your books.

How to turn on Auto-capture in PennyWise
Auto-capture is off by default. To enable it:
- Open PennyWise and go to Settings.
- Turn on Auto-capture. You will see a short disclosure explaining exactly what the feature does, and you can decline.
- Grant Android Notification access to PennyWise when prompted.
That is it. New bank alerts will start showing up as drafts in your approval queue. To turn it off, flip the toggle back, or revoke notification access in your Android settings, and either one stops it immediately.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need my bank login?
No. Auto-capture never asks for your bank login, password, or account number. It reads the notification your bank already sent.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
Account and card numbers are masked on your device first. Then a masked snippet is sent, transiently, to our AI processing provider to read the amount and merchant, and it is never stored on a server.
What about duplicate alerts?
If you get both a bank app push and an SMS for the same transfer, PennyWise merges them into one entry.
Can I still add expenses by hand?
Yes. Manual entry is still there, three taps: amount, category, save. Auto-capture just removes the typing when your bank does the announcing for you.
PennyWise is a free, private, offline expense tracker for Android. Log expenses in 3 taps, or turn on optional Auto-capture to draft them straight from your bank notifications.
