Privacy Policy

Overview

PennyWise is designed with privacy as a core principle. Your financial data stays on your device and is never uploaded to our servers. The only exception is the optional Auto-capture feature (off by default), which transiently sends a masked notification snippet for processing — see "Notification Access & Automatic Transaction Capture" below.

Data We Collect

Data Stored Locally (On Your Device Only)

The following data is stored only on your device and is never transmitted to us:

• Transaction records (amount, category, notes, date)
• App preferences (currency, sound settings, notification preferences)

This data is stored in your device's local storage and can be deleted at any time through the app's "Clear All Data" feature in Settings.

Analytics & Crash Reporting

We use the following third-party services to improve app stability and understand general usage patterns:

Notification Access & Automatic Transaction Capture (Optional)

PennyWise offers an optional feature that reads incoming notifications from banking and payment apps to automatically create draft transactions for you to review. This feature is turned off by default and works only if you explicitly enable it.

How it works

1. You enable "Auto-capture" in Settings and grant Android's Notification Access permission. Before enabling, we show a disclosure screen explaining exactly what the feature does — you can decline.
2. When a notification that looks like a bank or payment alert arrives, the app reads its text.
3. Account and card numbers are masked on your device before the text is used — only the last few digits are kept.
4. The masked text is sent transiently to our AI processing provider to extract the transaction details (amount, merchant, type). This is the only time notification text leaves your device, and it is not stored on our servers.
5. The extracted details become a draft entry that you review and approve before anything is saved. Nothing is recorded automatically.

What we send / don't send

• We send: a masked snippet of the matched notification (account and card numbers removed).
• We do not send: your stored transactions, contacts, full notification history, or notifications from non-financial apps.

Turning it off

Toggle "Auto-capture" off in Settings, or revoke Notification Access in your Android system settings, at any time. Either one stops all notification reading immediately.

Data We Do NOT Collect

• Personal information (name, email, phone number)
• Bank account or card details
• Location data
• Your transaction data (amounts, categories, notes)

Data Storage & Security

• All financial data is stored locally on your device
• No account or sign-up is required
• No cloud sync or backup to external servers
• Your data never leaves your device — except for the optional Auto-capture feature above, and even then only a masked notification snippet is processed transiently and is never stored

Data Deletion

You can delete all your data at any time:

1. Open PennyWise
2. Go to Settings
3. Tap "Clear All Data"

Uninstalling the app will also remove all locally stored data.

Third-Party Services

The Groq processing request is routed through our own server, which holds the AI provider key and forwards only the masked snippet. We do not sell, trade, or share your data with third parties for marketing purposes.

Children's Privacy

PennyWise does not knowingly collect data from children under 13. The app does not require any personal information to function.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.
